Letter: Regarding COVID-19 and the Otero County health department

To the editor:
Hundreds of 70-plus residents of Otero and Crowley counties are indebted to Rick Ritter and the county health department for getting us the Moderna vaccine against COVID-19 so quickly and providing it to us in a clinic that showed great preparation and organization.
The drive-through clinic functioned smooth as glass, thanks to the health department, all the volunteers, the sheriff’s department and Rocky Ford’s law enforcement and firefighters. I know that Rick has been preparing for an epidemic for many years, and his planning was evident in this very successful vaccine clinic. Distribution has run into many problems elsewhere, but our community was wonderfully well served by this clinic. ....

During World War II, my parents and other members of the Greatest Generation were asked to sacrifice for the war effort. There was rationing of tires, coffee, sugar, meat, cheese, gas, cars, shoes, toothpaste, and many other items. One had to register for a ration book, and it had to be surrendered upon death.
Rationing began in January 1942 and continued until the end of the war. Sugar continued to be rationed until 1947. People were urged to plant “victory gardens” and to can produce in order to reduce the demand for food in grocery stores. For nearly four long years, even longer for sugar, people complied; it was the patriotic thing to do. ....
