Local activists are faulting the Albany Common Council for tabling a bill that would ban tear gas and rubber bullets.
The Center for Law and Justice, All Of Us and Youth FX joined forces to host a virtual discussion Thursday. The Power of the People session followed a meeting where the Albany Common Council tabled Local Law C by a vote of 9 to 6. Approved in March by the Public Safety Committee, the law proposed by 9th Ward Common Councilor Judy Doesschate would have banned the use of tear gas and rubber bullets with the exception of a hostage situation.

Public Comments On Tear Gas, Rubber Bullets A Focus Of Monday's Albany Common Council Meeting

Discussion over public safety continued as the Albany Common Council convened virtually Monday night.
Councilors continued to discuss three major issues: Local Law C, which would ban tear gas and rubber bullets; the COVID Recovery Task Force, and the South Station incidents, from the April 14th clash between police and protestors to the April 22nd clearing of demonstrators who set up a tent city on the street outside the police station.
Ninth ward Common Councilor Judy Doesschate proposed Local Law C, which a majority of councilors did not want to vote on during a mid-April meeting because of disagreement as to whether to allow the use of tear gas and rubber bullets in certain circumstances. A public comment period took up half of Monday night s meeting. Residents continue to urge the panel to pass the measure. Nairobi Vives chairs of the Community Police Review Board. ....

Albany's Auditor, Councilors Criticize Police For "Overly Aggressive" Removal Of Protestors

Albany’s auditor and several members of the common council are criticizing the police department’s removal of protestors who had been camping outside of South Station for nearly a week.
Democratic Auditor Dorcey Applyrs and six councilors called the operation Thursday afternoon “disheartening and overly aggressive.” In a joint statement Friday, they say Albany Police should be exercising extra caution to de-escalate matters and utilize trusted voices to address concerns of injustice and police brutality. Albany Police arrested several people Thursday when officers cleared demonstrators from Arch Street as well as two people involved in an earlier clash with police there April 14. ....
