Ohio 'stand your ground' law starts Tuesday


Ohio s rules for using deadly force change on Tuesday.
That s when a new law, passed by Republicans in December, takes away the legal requirement that people try to retreat from a situation before using deadly force. 
Supporters say Ohio s  stand your ground law will give much needed protections to people caught in life-threatening situations. But opponents argue that make my day laws actually make people of color less safe and increase the number of gun deaths in America.
What is the law in Ohio?
Ohio gave people expansive self-defense rights while inside their homes and cars back in 2008, but the rules were different for city streets, county fairs and the grocery store parking lots. They required a person to attempt to retreat in public before firing a weapon. That requirement goes away Tuesday.  ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio It was a peaceful protest outside the Ohio Statehouse. Then it was a crowd of Proud Boys wailing on Dejuan Sharp.
The brawl came a few hours later.
Sharp, a Black man, attended the Jan. 6 protest along with other Black Lives Matter activists when, by his account, a Proud Boy in a baseball helmet called him a “n er.” ....

A pugilistic day of political demonstrations that included two brawls between far-right demonstrators insisting the presidential election was stolen and Black Lives Matter activists ended with no arrests Wednesday.
At least two rounds of fisticuffed rumbles with an array of participants broke out at different points through the afternoon along with some more minor spats. ....

COVID-19 Protesters Gather Outside Ohio GOP Senate Leader's Home, Seeking Veto Override

Protesters gathered outside GOP Senate President Larry Obhof s personal home Sunday seeking to pressure him to override a gubernatorial veto of legislation to weaken the health department.
The crowd at Obhof s was a conservative potpourri. Judi Phelps, who wore bright pink snowpants with a pistol holstered at her leg, said she organized the protest. Anti-vaccine advocates came, as did the Proud Boys, a far-right organization that was involved in a Washington D.C. brawl in which four people were stabbed after the Million MAGA March this month.
No testing, tracing [or] vaccines. We will not comply, one woman s sign at the protest stated. ....
