hello, everyone, thanks so much for joining me. i m fredricka whitfield in atlanta. in wisconsin a deadly shooting left a former judge dead and sources tell cnn the gunman was planning to target several other high-ranking government officials. former juneau county circuit court judge john roemer was gunned down in his home friday. police say the shooter then shot himself. sources say the gunman was also planning attacks on wisconsin governor tony evers and senate minority leader mitch mcconnell. we have details now. what more are investigators sharing. reporter: sources tell cnn the suspect had a list of targets, a long list of targets. officials say this was somehow related to the justice system. was it one case, several cases? that is simply not clear. what i can tell you this began friday morning when someone ran out of judge roemer s home, called 911 and told police someone had broken inside and shot two rounds inside that home. when police tried to negotiate with the s
reporter: fredericka, sources tell cnn the suspect had a long list of targets and officials say that this was somehow related to the judicial system. we don t yet know how. was this a single case or series of cases? we continue to ask the questions that law enforcement continues to ask as well. this all began 6:30 friday morning when someone ran out of judge roemer s home and called 911, that person reporting that someone had broken inside and fired off two rounds from a firearm. throughout the morning, once police arrived, they tried to negotiate with the suspect who was inside but eventually those talks simply broke down. around 10:15 a.m. friday, the tactical teams made entry into that home and that s where they found 68-year-old john roemer dead. they also found a 56-year-old suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside. throughout this investigation they ve learned that this was not random. here is what the officials in wisconsin said. this, as i mentioned befo
and with me now, cnn legal analyst, elliott williams, a former deputy assistant attorney general, and elliott, this is a friday night news dump, no question about it. no question. we know them well this this town. the justice department will not charge scavino, not charge mark meadows. they are charging peter navarro. how do you sort this out? you got to look at every case differently, jim, and set aside navarro and steve bannon who s also been charged. number one, the jobs each of these individuals held was different. steve bannon wasn t even a white house aide at the time of the conduct in question. right? number two, the nature of their behavior. there s at least the factual question as to whether meadows and scavino complied at least in part with the committee to a point that it just would have been hard to charge them with a crime. as a justice department, you want to be able to make the decision of do we think we could win this in front of a jury. it s just a cl
