As the 10-year anniversary of the Bastrop County Complex Fire approaches this fall, the county’s long term recovery team has announced its plans to memorialize the fire and the lingering effects of it, both positive and negative. Sheila Lowe, the executive director of the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team, told the Bastrop County Commissioners Court on Monday that programming will include community events, a golf tournament and a special magazine highlighting the stories of heroes and survivors from the fire. “Because (the) Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team was born out of that historic event, we thought that it’d be only fitting that we lead in the commemoration of it,” Lowe told the court. ....
The Bastrop County Commissioners Court on Monday approved a new location to house a pair of Confederate monuments that sit on the courthouse s grounds after a months-long process to find the obelisk and headstone a new home. The Commissioners Court approved the relocation by a 3-2 vote, with commissioners Donna Snowden and Mark Meuth dissenting. The monuments an obelisk erected in 1910 by a local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a granite headstone erected in 1964 by the state of Texas commemorating Joseph D. Sayers, a major in the Confederate army and Texas’ 22nd governor will be relocated to county property located off Texas 95 and Cool Water Drive in Bastrop. ....
Bastrop County is hoping to inoculate all residents against COVID-19 within 90 days as the county has been designated a vaccine distribution hub. County Judge Paul Pape s office on Tuesday announced a pre-registration process for local residents and those in adjoining rural counties to sign up to receive the vaccine. Bastrop County Cares, an intermediary organization, has set up a website covac.info for residents to register. “It is our primary objective to get everyone in Bastrop County, and other rural Central Texas counties, registered for the vaccine as soon as possible and to get vaccines administered to all our citizens within 90 days,” Pape’s office said. “We believe this is the quickest way to stop the pandemic locally and to save lives and the suffering of those who contract the virus.” ....
