With the early signing period approaching, Hank Pepper’s decision was already made.
The 2021 long snapper from Chandler High School in Arizona was committed to San Diego State and prepared to spend the next chapter of his life in Southern California. Then Michigan State called.

A new wave of departures continues for Michigan State.
Redshirt freshman tight end Tommy Guajardo, redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Damon Kaylor, fifth-year senior defensive end DeAri Todd, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Chris Mayfield, redshirt freshman defensive end Jasiyah Robinson and redshirt freshman walk-on long snapper Bryce Eimer all entered the transfer portal on Monday. None of the six players have ever appeared in a game with the Spartans.

Matt Coghlin in 2018 set a Michigan State record with 18 consecutive made field goals.
The kicker’s name also came up plenty the following season but for the wrong reason as he went through an extended slump for the first time in his career.

Michigan State’s defense already faced a significant challenge.
The Spartans lost seven starters on that side of the ball – six of them three-year starters – from the 2019 team.
The process of retooling the defense came with additional complications as Mark Dantonio retired after 13 seasons leading the program and Mel Tucker was hired as his replacement. Like Dantonio, Tucker is a former defensive back and secondary coach by trade who worked under Nick Saban.
