“Quite frankly Ms. Cantel your behaviour was disgusting and I don’t mind being that blunt,” said Judge M. Segu before sentencing Cantel. “What the three of you did was indefensible, and, but for the joint submission that is being put before the court, I would have zero hesitation imposing a longer sentence. Do you understand me? This behaviour is just atrocious.” Cantel’s defence Laura Nischuk and Crown Prosecutor William Lewison, entered a joint-submission to the court. Cantel pleaded guilty to stealing a Honda Civic and being an occupant of the Honda knowing there was a firearm in the vehicle in an incident stemming from Nov. 20, 2020, where five Westside Outlaws street gang members took RCMP on a 150-km, two-hour chase.

North Battleford Crown Prosecutor Jennifer Schmidt welcomed the stiff sentence. “The Court imposed a significant sentence today and the decision highlights the struggle that Loon Lake had with respect to gang activity,” said Schmidt after the sentence hearing in Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench on March 12. “The decision highlights the serious risk Mr. Dillon’s actions posed for the communities in and around Loon Lake, but also for the RCMP officers whose job it was to stop him,” added Schmidt. “The Court highlighted the professionalism the officers showed here. As I said in my submissions to the Court, the bravery that these officers demonstrated is what we mean when we try to teach our children about what it means to be brave. It was appropriate that the officers’ actions, and the impact that this offence had on them, was recognized by the Court.”

Wahpistikwan and four others were arrested in November 2020 after six RCMP detachments teamed up to catch them. It started at about 3 p.m. on Nov. 20 when Maidstone RCMP got a call that a grey Honda was stolen from a business in Lashburn by three men wearing red - known colours worn by the street gang Westside Outlaws. The men in the Honda were seen fleeing east on Highway 16, followed closely by a small red Ford car. The Lashburn Fire Department informed Maidstone RCMP that a small red car was on fire east of Lashburn so police efforts were now focused on the grey Honda.
