evacuate. tonight the damage done and the problems it s causing. hi everybody i m kai jackson. denise and vic are off. we have several developing stories right now. we begin with an emergency at a busy downtown hotel. close to 1,000 visitors are being evacuated after a major water leak forces the waterfront marriott to shut down. the hotel was close to capacity. kelly mcpherson has the story. reporter: right behind me is the last of the 900 guests who are waiting to get back into the hotel to get their stuff from their room so they can sleep some where else tonight. this is all because one water pipe burst this afternoon. it took $130 million to build the mariott water front hotel and just one ruptured waterfront to shut it down. are you serious? yeah. oh, no, that s not cool. reporter: water from a stairwell pipe flooded thehotel from the stairwell down. at 97% capacity, hundreds of out of towners waited for hours to hear if they were staying in the hotel. ....

stay on the streets. in two of the court hearings, he was found guilty of violation of probation. but no additional court time was imposed. reporter: and in april, this wjz video obtained shows what prosecutors and police believe is him robbing and beating a man for just $7. the court records show the victim refused to cooperate. and that case was dropped. we have spent the last 24 hours, pouring over court records that are over a foot high, trying to say, what could have been done differently. and our conclusion is that we as prosecutors did everything we could. reporter: in pit-karen s case, charging documents reveal merit and wagner were on the hunt to rob someone, and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, innocently walking back from penn station, on his iphone with his mom, who heard him on the phone. she heard screaming at him to give money. and he said, i don t have any cash, here s my wallet. she heard him start like screaming and making noises ....

oil disaster in the gulf as tropical storm bonnie moves toward the area. nbc s kristen dahlgren joins us now live from new orleans. good morning, kristen. reporter: good morning, veronica. well, officials made that decision late yesterday to evacuate the well site. so over the next day or so, all of the ships and personnel will be leaving. that cap will stay after holding back for a week. officials say they are confident in its ability. it will remain unmonitored for a time, robots and cameras watching it will go off site. the last to go and first to come back to check things out once the storm passes by. either way it could be some time beof this start work onon the relief wells. it s believed the delay could be between one and two weeks. meantime closer to show officials are working to remove that boom they had laid out to protect the shore. they are afraid it could push into the wetlands and do more damage. they are pulling that boom in, trying to secure it as we c ....
