SUSAN PARKER: New high school s name carries centuries of history

The St. Johns County School Board has chosen to name a new high school Tocoi Creek High School.
The Board s selection brings focus to a very old historic and perhaps prehistoric name in this area. No doubt Tocoi was a term or name used by the Indians before the Spanish ever arrived and wrote it down.
One of the earliest appearances of the name Tocoi or Tocoy was part of the testimony in a hearing held in St. Augustine in 1602. The Spanish crown was trying to decide if funding the military post of St. Augustine was worth the cost. The story of the investigation was published in 1959 in Florida on Trial by historian Charles W. Arnade.
