Makhanda shutdown set to continue Tuesday
Taxi association and civic organisation representatives late this afternoon confirmed that the blockades Makhanda experienced today would continue from 7am Tuesday morning 25 May. Hundreds of taxis from GRATA and Uncedo taxi associations, supported by a large group of residents and Unemployed People’s Movement (UPM) members, today saw most businesses closed across the city and minimal attendance at public schools. ....

Long queues at Post Offices as activists picket for Cov...

Activists affiliated with the #PayTheGrants campaign picketed outside Post Offices across the country on 30 April, demanding that the R350 Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant be extended and increased immediately. 
The grant was terminated as of 30 April. This means that no new applications will be processed from Friday.
GroundUp visited Sassa in Bellville in Cape Town, as well as Post Offices in Nigel in Gauteng, Eldorado Park in Johannesburg, and Makhanda in Eastern Cape.
In Bellville, about 20 activists picketed outside the Sassa office, where hundreds of beneficiaries were queuing for their disability grants.
Beneficiary Yvonne Klaasen said that she hasn’t received her disability grant since December, even though she has tried to collect it every month. She was among those not in support of the picket because she claimed that people were “using and abusing” the R350 grant. ....

Township rubbish collection halts after vehicles torched
Makana Municipality has suspended refuse collection services in Makhanda’s township areas this week, after two municipal vehicles were set alight. The incidents occurred at times when service-delivery protests were under way.
In the most recent incident, on Monday 12 April, a Makana employee was forced to hand over the keys of a municipal bakkie and flee when a large crowd stopped him, seized the vehicle and set it alight. Police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said the incident occurred shortly after 3.30pm in Extension 9, Joza, between the Mayfield housing development and eNkanini informal settlement. ....
