| While business has picked up for travel agencies, they still face a number of headaches as the industry begins to recover from the coronavirus crisis, a Travel Experts member survey has found. The Raleigh, N.C.-based host agency (No. 31 on Travel Weekly s 2020 Power List) found that members are concerned about slow and unresponsive suppliers; changing protocols and testing requirements that differ greatly from destination to destination; and uncertainty, especially in regards to cruising. Travel Experts members also pointed to a number of other challenges they face in the current marketplace: Long phone waits, lack of availability of rental cars, higher airfares, frequent airline schedule changes, travel experiences where services have been cut, uncertainty in Europe, short lead time with client requests and the stability of suppliers. ....

Multiple signs have pointed to consumers readiness to travel again, with demand for leisure travel steadily climbing. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened more than 1.58 million people at U.S. airports ahead of Easter weekend, the highest recorded number since the pandemic began last March. In fact, in a promising sign, the U.S. has seen consistent daily passenger numbers above one million passengers in a day. Another encouraging statistic, more than 100,000 Americans have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine so far, while more than 57 million are fully vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that fully vaccinated individuals are at low risk of spreading the disease while traveling. ....

A growing number of travel advisors are adding fees and urging clients to buy insurance to protect their vacation investments, as part of the wide-ranging impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the travel industry. “Deciding that it was time to start charging fees after 15 years of no fees was very difficult, but it was something that I have wanted to do for quite some time,” said Renee Taylor, Renee Taylor Travel, affiliated with Travel Experts. “I enlisted the help of a colleague and came up with a fee structure that would make me feel comfortable in presenting fees to my long-time existing clients as well new clients. Most of my clients were very receptive and even commented that they have wondered why I waited this long to charge for my services.” ....
