By James Muonwa, Mashonaland West Correspondent A schizophrenic former police officer allegedly assaulted a prominent Chinhoyi lawyer at a ghetto shebeen, where a misunderstanding over a US$2 pool bet turned violent. Crispen Ben (31) of 22659 Rujeko, Chinhoyi appeared in court facing an assault charge. The complainant in the matter is Joshua Mangeyi (33), a well-known legal practitioner in the town. Magistrate Tapiwa Banda on Friday invoked the Mental Health Act and committed Ben to Chikurubi Maximum Prison’s psychiatric unit for treatment after an evaluation to ascertain his mental state by a psychiatrist established he suffered from mild schizophrenia. The state case, led by Tendai Tapi is that on 5 February 2021 at around 2200 hours and at a shebeen popularly known as kwaMai Nzuwa in Chikonohono township, Ben and Mangeyi’s friend only identified as Dennis each betted US$2 over a game of pool with the winner set to pocket the money. ....
In a case of an exorcism gone wrong, a sangoma beat his client to death during a cleansing ceremony. According to the youthful self-styled traditional healer, he was attacking the goblins which were causing his clientâs misfortunes. Faceofmalawi has learned from local publication H-Metro that 26-year-old Isaac Tete of Athens Compound, Chinhoyi has since been arrested and charged with the murder of his client Vunganai Munyengedzi. He appeared before Chinhoyi provincial magistrate Melody Rwizi to answer to the charges of killing his client. The magistrate granted Tete $10 000 bail and remanded him to 1 April. The court heard that after being approached for a consultation, the sangoma told Munyengedzi that he should undergo a healing and cleansing ceremony to get rid of the goblins which he claimed were bringing misfortune to him. ....
By James Muonwa, Mashonaland West Correspondent A 26-year-old traditional healer who was arrested over the brutal murder of a Chinhoyi man during an ill-fated cleansing ceremony, was Friday granted ZWL$1 000 bail. Chinhoyi magistrate Melody Rwizi granted Isaac Tete his freedom following consent from the Prosecutor-General’s office. Among other bail conditions, Tete was ordered to report to police once every fortnight, not to interfere with witnesses and to continue residing at his last given address until finalisation of the case. He was remanded to 1 April 2021. Tete had appeared in court Thursday facing murder and had to spend the night in custody. ....

The traditional healer, Isaac Tete (26) of Anthens Compound, Chinhoyi Thursday appeared in court facing murder. The court heard that between 9 and 11 January 2021 at Long Valley Plots, Murereka, Lion’s Den, Tete was performing a healing ceremony to purportedly get rid of goblins he claimed were tormenting Vunganai Munyengedze (age not given). In the process, he picked up a log and started beating up the now deceased all over his body. ....
