Joshimath Crisis: The cracks on the Badrinath Highway near Singhdhar Ward have also been increasing. The administrative officers inspected the spot after receiving information about it.
For decades, the government ignored expert warnings against blasting, building and digging in the region. Today the town’s very existence is at risk.
Joshimath is sinking: Over 863 houses of the around 4,500 buildings in Joshimath known as the gateway to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage sites have developed cracks since October 2021. At least 181 of the buildings in the town have been placed in the unsafe zone, and 275 families have been moved out to safer areas, district authorities have informed.
A combined analysis by educational institutions in Greece, specializing in remote sensing techniques, indicates the displacement of the Joshimath region exceeding 10 cm per year over a period of the past four years.
