Mexico lost 63-40 to Macon. [Eric Mattson] By:  Editor Mexico turned the ball over, Macon scored. Mexico turned the ball over, Macon scored. It’s a pattern that repeated on Saturday in the championship game of the Macon Tournament. Not at their best except for one quarter, the Bulldogs fell 63-40 to finish second in the weeklong event.     It wasn’t Mexico’s night, and to Blevins’ observation, Macon was almost unerring in their offensive touch.

Mexico girls batter Broofield | The Mexico Ledger

Mexico girls batter Broofield By:  Editor Brookfield learned something from their first encounter with Mexico back in December. They opened Monday’s encounter in the Macon Tournament in a zone, and it worked – for a few minutes. Once Mexico’s Bulldogs broke through they were near unstoppable, cruising to a 68-26 win to go 10-2 on the year. “At the beginning of the year teams didn’t know who we were,” explained Taylor DeMint. “When they play man, teams can’t stop us. The zone slows us down.” The Bulldogs began to edge away in the first. And when Ruby Haefling drained a three in the second, the faucet opened.

Mexico girls knock off Eugene | The Mexico Ledger

Mexico girls knock off Eugene Published by admin on Wed, 01/13/2021 - 8:05pm By:  Editor There were a few moments on Friday night when it looked as if Mexico’s winning ways might suffer a blow. Throughout the second half in Eugene, the host Eagles threatened to close within 10 points. But each time one of head coach Ed Costley’s squad would repair the damage. “We held on,” he said of the Bulldogs 56-43 road win, giving Mexico a 9-2 record heading into next week’s Macon Tournament. Eugene’s Kaydi Alderman made it an 8-point game, 31-23, two minutes into the third quarter. With Mexico in foul trouble, guard Riley Blevins was forced to post up against the big Eagles forwards.

Bulldogs can't overcome second quarter woes | The Mexico Ledger

Bulldogs can’t overcome second quarter woes Published by admin on Wed, 12/23/2020 - 7:29am By:  Editor For Mexico, Saturday’s matchup with South Boone County at the Gary Filbert Classic came down to a frustrating word: if. “If our shots fell it would have been tight,” observed Jordyn Thurman. “But ours weren’t falling and theirs were.” The rims were unkind to Mexico Saturday evening at the Gary Filbert Classic in the MHS Sports Complex. visitors’ 13 points in the first quarter. But early on, Mya Miller and the Bulldogs ran evenly with South Boone. Miller opened the scoring with an underhand lay up and added 6 more before the first buzzer. Her final bucket was a coast to coast romp. Thurman sank one of two from the line and Alexis Willer made a strong move into the paint for two.

Mexico girls bulldoze Hannibal | The Mexico Ledger

Mexico girls bulldoze Hannibal Alexis Willer drives in the Bulldogs win at Hannibal. [Eric Mattson] By:  Editor After battering Hannibal for three quarters on Thursday, the Bulldogs could rein in their offense. But the girls – particularly Elizabeth Joiner – would not let up on defense. Joiner’s skirmish with the Pirates’ Gracie Martin and anyone else who dared to invade that precious sliver of space under the rim was more than a fourth quarter sideshow. “I feel like everyone was watching,” Joiner said. “I was not going to let this post player get the ball.” Mexico allowed a single basket in the final eight minutes to keelhaul the Pirates 51-15 in Hannibal.
