Toward the end of a conversation Sunday with Abd al-Fattah Iskafi at his home in Sheikh Jarrah, news came that Israel’s Supreme Court had postponed a hearing scheduled for Monday on the fate of the Palestinian neighborhood in East Jerusalem. The court was to hear an appeal of an eviction order issued by a lower court against the Iskafis and other families.
It’s impossible to say Iskafi breathed a sigh of relief when he learned the new session is to be held within 30 days. “I feel like I’ve been sentenced to death but the execution keeps being delayed slightly. Now, it’s been postponed again,” he told Haaretz. Nevertheless, he took a deeper breath.
