Six Republicans vie Thursday for nomination to try to succeed late Sen. Chafin; Democrat enters race


Six Republicans are vying to become the nominee Thursday to try to succeed their late partymate in the 38th state Senate District.
Sen. Ben Chafin, who was 60, died from complications related to COVID-19 on New Year’s Day. He was in his third term as senator after taking the seat in 2014 in a special election following the resignation of former Democratic senator Phillip Puckett. Chafin won again in 2015 when he ran unopposed in the primary and general elections, before winning for the final time in 2019 over George McCall III.
Now, for the second time in less than a decade, the district’s senate seat will be filled by someone running in a special election, this one set for March 23. ....

Meeting in person, Senate opens session on somber note with tribute to Sen. Chafin


RICHMOND — The General Assembly opened its 2021 regular session on a somber note Wednesday by remembering Sen. Ben Chafin, R-Russell, who died a week and a half ago from complications of COVID-19.
“Southwest Virginia is a much better place because of Ben,” Sen. Todd Pillion, R-Washington, said on the Senate floor during a tribute to his friend and colleague.
The Senate is meeting in person at the Science Museum of Virginia, while the House of Delegates is conducting its business virtually. Two senators were absent on the first day of the legislative session: Lynwood Lewis, D-Accomack, and Jill Holtzman Vogel, R-Fauquier. Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw, D-Fairfax, said Lewis tested positive with COVID-19 and is expected to return to the Senate next week, and Vogel is waiting on the results of a COVID-19 test. ....
