Guest columnist Jonathan Kahane: In a ‘galaxy far, far away’ BLOOMBERG PHOTO/CHRISTOPHER PIKE Published: 4/20/2021 1:45:35 PM I do believe that in the not too distant future, space and time travel will become available to the general public and will ultimately grow to be commonplace. Before that eventuality occurs, motivated, adventurous, and brave souls like me will pave the way to that glorious era which I think will ultimately save our civilization from extinction. I have just completed one of the first space/time explorations sponsored by a top secret arm of NASA (or was it SpaceX?) and feel obligated to share my experiences. I was able to join the crew, because one of my sons works for SpaceX and got me the inside track another example of it’s not what you know but whom you know. ....
Guest columnist Jonathan Kahane: House of Horrors is full of surprises JACOBLUND Published: 3/9/2021 5:02:29 PM Having spent my formative years in The Bronx, and often taking a cool dip in the then heavily polluted Hudson River on hot summer days, I was a mere stone’s throw away from Palisades Amusement Park over on the Jersey cliffs. It was a short trip across the Hudson River via the George Washington Bridge $1 toll round trip. (It’s now $15, but I would happily pay the piper to be able to spend another weekend evening there.) The park closed in 1971 along with its famous wood Cyclone roller coaster and Tunnel of Love. The name of the latter concession was changed to The House of Horrors, but when you stop to think about it, the two are often synonymous aren’t they? ....
Guest columnist Jonathan Kahane: An answer to everything Published: 2/3/2021 12:13:23 PM There are so many things that I just don’t understand and never will. That conclusion flies in the face of my spending 23 years of my life in academe as a student and an additional 40 years teaching and conducting research in psychology at a local college. If it had all been left up to me, I would probably still be wandering around the Bronx schoolyards looking for a stickball game. Thanks Mom and Dad. I have learned to live with open-ended questions that I can’t answer right now. The list of these conundrums would fill a book. That won’t stop me from continuing to look for solutions. ....
Guest columnist Jonathan Kahane: Give MCAS some time off Northampton Association of School Employees Vice President Heather Brown talks about organizing a standout in front of Northampton City Hall on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, in opposition to MCAS testing during the pandemic. Modified: 1/1/2021 6:23:58 AM Letter to the editor: “You know Jon, at best only about half of what you say makes any sense at all.” That, and similar comments, have been directed toward me since I can remember. In fact, a couple of you have even expressed it on these pages. As a kid, I would often take the barb to heart and shut up. Now, as a senior citizen, I actually take it as a compliment. I recognize that 50% actually puts me at the head of the class. It could be due to grade inflation, but compared to what is being expressed by others I’m doing extraordinarily well. ....
