Fiji must commit political will over crimes against women, girls, says Ali

While International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women, Fiji must not lose sight of the struggles ahead, says Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali.
She stressed this in a statement as Fiji marked International Women’s Day today, March 8, saying that while the country’s progress towards gender equality was still lagging, public services needed to be scaled up to meet women’s rights and increase women’s participation.
Ali said Fiji must continue the collective action to demand for accountability for crimes against women and girls in the country. ....

Fiji's Cyclone Yasa damage bill climbs to $345 million


Rebuilding of education facilities damaged by Cyclone Yasa under way in Fiji.
He said the education sector was also impacted, with more than 90 schools damaged across the country.
The minister said the health sector had recorded extensive damage to 25 of its facilities in Macuata, Cakaudrove, Bua and Taveuni.
“Despite these challenges, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services continued to work against the odds to ensure basic health services were still available to affected Fijians,” he said.
Seruiratu said after the detailed damage assessment by the Agriculture Ministry, the total damage bill for the sector was recorded at more than $US72.5m (NZ$99m). ....

THE official Wearing Fiji 2021 show was launched last week on Friday in hopes to enlighten sponsors and get them on board.
This is according to the co-founder of Wearing Fiji Samson Lee who said last year they had not received any monetary funding.
“We have a visual presentation that we are going to showcase today and also to release the dates of our show which is on May 1, 2021,” he said.
“We kind of want to open the fashion season by having it around that time because in the world that’s the time fashion actually kicks off. So the launch is basically to also honour the people that came down to our show last year and our VIP clients that supported us and we wanted to treat them and say thank you and hopefully they can come on board again this year.” ....

Cyclone Yasa damage to Fiji worth nearly $US250m


Cyclone Yasa caused an estimated loss of almost $US250 million to infrastructure, livelihoods and agriculture, Fiji s government said.
The category five storm left four people dead and thousands homeless when it hit the country in December.

Speaking in Parliament, the Disaster Management Minister Inia Seruiratu said about 139,000 people and 31,000 households were directly affected by the super storm.
Seruiratu said more than 8000 homes were destroyed.
He said the education sector was also impacted with more than 90 schools damaged across the country.
