OSU Marion professor helps discover new saber-toothed cat species

More than five million years ago, there were huge, saber-toothed cats that roamed North America, weighing at least 400 pounds, and taking down prey weighing up to 6,000 pounds.
When Jonathan Calede and John Orcutt discovered this new cat species, they could not believe it at first.
There s no way there s a cat that big, that s just way too big, Calede said.
Calede, who is an assistant professor of evolution, ecology, and organismal biology at The Ohio State University at Marion, conducted a study on the cats, alongside John Orcutt, an assistant professor of biology at Gonzaga University in Washington. After more than five years of research, their findings were published in the Journal of Mammalian Evolution Monday.  ....

The researchers visited numerous museums in the U.S., Canada and France, and they used software to compare lions, pumas, panthers, jaguars, and tigers to their saber-toothed cat to confirm it was entirely new fossils and not a previously identified extinct big cat.
The new species of saber-toothed cat, on average, weighed 600 pounds. But they weighed in up to 900 pounds, making it among the largest known cats in history. It lived 5 to 9 million years ago; scientists discovered with its massive forearms it could take down prey as much as 6,000 pounds, but they think it often hunted prey that weighed between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds. ....

Largest Cat in History: Scientists Newly Identify Giant Saber-toothed Cat That Lived in North America

May 03, 2021 05:50 PM EDT
Scientists reported on May 3, 2021, in a new study, a giant saber-toothed cat inhabited North America (Columbus, Ohio) between 5 million and 9 million years ago, weighing about 900 pounds and capturing prey that possibly weighed 1,000 to 2,000 pounds.

Identification of the Cat s Fossils
The researchers finalized a meticulous comparison of seven fossil specimens that are uncategorized with formerly recognized fossils and samples of bone from around the world to describe the new species. Their discovery makes a case for using the elbow portion of the humerus - adding to the teeth - to have an identification of large saber-toothed cats fossils whose huge forearms enabled them to conquer their prey. ....

They discovered a new giant cat that hunted bison 9 million years ago

They discovered a new giant cat that hunted bison 9 million years ago
Up to 400 kg And hunted prey that may weigh 450 to 900 kilograms.
The researchers completed a comprehensive comparison of seven unclassified fossil specimens with previously identified fossil and bone samples from all over the world.
Describe new species. Their findings proved that in addition to teeth, the elbow of the humerus can also be used to identify fossils of large saber-toothed cats. These cats have large forearms and can subdue their prey.
Scientists estimate that the newly discovered cat weighs about 272 kilograms on average and can kill up to 2.7 tons of prey, indicating that their discovery provides evidence for another giant cat. ....
