2021 Tech Titans | Washingtonian (DC)

Washington’s tech industry hasn’t been immune to the pandemic. Companies such as the IT giant DXC and the event-organizing platform Cvent cut jobs amid the slowdown. But some, including the hot cloud-computing company Appian, committed to hundreds of new hires.
Indeed, plenty of other good business news came from Washingtonian’s Tech Titans during the past year. Our 2021 winners who were selected through both reporting and an informal process of nominations from their peers managed to start up new and innovative companies, close on huge funding rounds, ink massive contracts, and announce initial public offerings.
Some of this year’s Tech Titans expanded their companies not only in spite of the pandemic but because of it. Michael Chasen, founder of the “edtech” firm Blackboard, leveraged the demand for at-home education to launch Class, a company that creates virtual classrooms using Zoom. The cameras could be deployed soon after that, McMahon said at a briefing this afternoon.
Sheriff Eugene Conway is expected to turn in a proposal for body cameras by the end the day, county officials said.
The initial estimates put the cost at $450,000-500,000, McMahon said.
Once Conway’s plan is turned in, McMahon’s office will put a final price tag on the program, said Justin Sayles, McMahon’s spokesman. Legislators will vote Tuesday on the proposal to give the sheriff’s office money, he said. ....

Cardiology startup Vector Remote Care racks up $12.5M in Series A round

Digital cardiology startup Vector Remote Care scored $12.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Updata Partners.
Located on the West Coast, Vector was founded by Kevin Hoffman in 2017 and focused on remote heart monitoring.
WHAT IT DOES
The company has created HIPAA-compliant software that is able to help capture data and help manage and analyze patients remotely. One of the company s tools, called CIED Monitoring, is focused on helping clinicians incorporate and make sense of cardiac implantable devices with its intelligence platform and on-demand device technicians.
The other tool, called CardiacRPM, is able to capture data from hypertension and heart failure patients smart devices such as connected scales and blood pressure monitors. ....

Syracuse, N.Y. A Liverpool man has been identified by deputies as the person they say pointed an airsoft gun at another driver during a road rage incident Saturday on Interstate 81.
Kenneth Scott Jr., 38, was charged with second-degree menacing after pointing the gun at another driver near the 7th North Street exit, according to Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jon Seeber. An airsoft gun is like a BB-gun but fires non-metal spheres.
The incident was reported just before 2:30 p.m. when the driver who was threatened got off I-81 and drove to Destiny USA to call 911, deputies said. ....

5 Jamesville inmates go to hospital after K2 overdoses, deputies say

One inmate was found unresponsive in his cell, said Sgt. Jon Seeber, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
K2 is also known as spike and synthetic marijuana, which contains a synthetic version of THC made from chemicals. Deputies do not yet know how the drug was brought into the prison.
Deputies found the inmate at 7:42 p.m. on Saturday. The medical staff gave the inmate naloxone and the inmate regained consciousness, deputies said.
The inmate was then taken to Upstate University Hospital to be treated and was then released, Seeber said. ....
