Arrest, killing of IPs in Iloilo condemned

A human rights watchdog and farmer’s group condemned the arrests and killings of indigenous people from the Tumandok community on Panay Island.
“These killings and arrests are meant to instill fear upon indigenous communities in order to silence their opposition to so-called development projects that encroach upon their ancestral domains and right to self-determination,” Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay said, referring to the construction of the Jalaur Mega Dam project, which the Tumandok IPs have opposed.
Karapatan called on the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) to investigate on the killings of the nine IPs and arrests of 17 others in simultaneous police-military operations last Dec. 30. ....

Groups condemn killing of 9 IPs in Iloilo, Capiz

ILOILO CITY – Several advocacy and church groups have condemned the killing of members of indigenous peoples (IPs) Panay Bukidnon, or Tumandok, in simultaneous police raids conducted in alleged New People’s Army (NPA) hotspots in Iloilo and Capiz last December 30.

“Those killed were recognized indigenous community leaders in their respective barangays (villages). They were civilians and not armed combatants,” said Panay Alliance Karapatan in a statement.
Units of the Philippine National Police (PNP), led by the Western Visayas office of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG-6), conducted a simultaneous raids on December 30 to implement 28 search warrants for illegal possession of firearms and explosives in remote villages of Calin ....
