Officer Who Fatally Shot Andre Hill Fired From Police Department
Bodycam footage showed Columbus police officer Adam Coy shooting and killing Andre Hill, a Black man.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) A white Ohio police officer was fired Monday after bodycam footage showed him fatally shooting 47-year-old Andre Hill a Black man who was holding a cellphone and refusing to administer first aid for several minutes.
Columbus police officer Adam Coy was fired hours after a hearing was held to determine his employment, Columbus Public Safety Director Ned Pettus Jr. said in a statement.
“The actions of Adam Coy do not live up to the oath of a Columbus Police officer, or the standards we, and the community, demand of our officers,” the statement read. “The shooting of Andre Hill is a tragedy for all who loved him in addition to the community and our Division of Police.” ....

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Croatia, Causing Widespread Damage

PETRINJA, Croatia (AP) A strong earthquake hit central Croatia on Tuesday, destroying buildings and sending panicked people fleeing into rubble-covered streets in a town southeast of the capital. Authorities said at least six people were killed and dozens were injured.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said the magnitude 6.3 quake hit 46 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Zagreb. It caused widespread damage in the hardest-hit town of Petrinja. The same area was struck by a 5.2 quake on Monday. ....

Mitch McConnell Punts On $2,000 Stimulus Checks Bill Despite Bipartisan Pressure
The GOP leader said the Senate would begin a process to review President Trump s demand for increased coronavirus relief payments.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday punted on a House-passed bill to increase coronavirus relief payments to $2,000 despite mounting bipartisan support for the checks, including from President Donald Trump.
McConnell acknowledged that Trump, as he signed the most recent COVID-19 relief package on Sunday, also asked for action on three areas of his concern, including the stimulus payments. The other issues on Trump’s wish list are intensified election security and lesser liability protections for social media companies. ....
