As public health experts continue to push the population towards herd immunity against COVID-19, San Luis Obispo County is beginning the work of vaccinating homeless individuals housed within their shelter systems by bringing the vaccine to them. This week, Transitions Mental Health Association teamed up with the San Luis Obispo Police Department to provide the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to people living within homeless encampments. Lt. John Villanti with SLO PD said it’s not a simple task finding individuals since there are several miles of encampments scattered throughout the city. “It wasn’t like we knew exactly where they were, Villanti said. It took us 3-4 hours to walk many many miles of the open space to find the encampments and if they were occupied, offer the services of providing the vaccination for them.” ....

It s a crime where a thief gets underneath a parked car and cuts off a part that s there to reduce pollution. Without a catalytic converter, when a car is turned on the exhaust will often make a loud noise like a jack hammer. Stolen catalytic converters can be sold for hundreds of dollars to shady scrap yards. It s precious metals that thieves are after. Catalytic converters are made of palladium and rhodium. Their prices have soared to record highs as car emissions rules get stricter around the world and demand for the materials grows. ....

Several of the traffic safety laws for 2021 are enhancing laws already on the books. It s just basically meant to bolster these rules and laws that are already out there to hopefully get people to pay more attention to them, said Officer Mike Poelking of the San Luis Obispo office of the California Highway Patrol. Years ago, it became illegal to leave a child unattended in a car. But starting January 1, a Good Samaritan will be off the hook for any civil or criminal liability for rescuing a child under 6 years old from a car that s too hot, too cold or lacking ventilation. ....
