my name is thomas dipiero of the humanities and sciences here at smu and i m pleased to welcome you. tonight s event is sponsored by the center for presidential history, and i m pleased to announce that just recently the center was moved. we were very pleased to welcome him to welcome them here because they complement the research and teaching mission of the university so well. the center for presidential history promotes the study of u.s. presidency through teaching, research, public outreach events and also through its collective memory project which is an oral history run by staff on the center who film and record archives of people who have been in various administrations as well as local officials who work closely with those administrations. the center also runs a very robust postdoctoral fellowship program. it s been in effect for about five years and it s rapidly become probably the most influential and famous fellowship program of its kind. each who completes the term

[applause] the center for presidential history complements the work we do. in addition to the work they do in their own teaching and research, they complement the department of history as well as the center for southwest studies. you ll be
in the probe to date. rhodes appearing in a federal court in texas. he was seen in jeans and a t-shirt and pled not guilty. he remains in custody, facing up to 20 years in prison on that charge alone. while his estranged ex-wife spoke out today. i think he planned it very carefully. i think he planned for himself to not get arrested by seemingly stay out of the capitol himself, but that entire stack, the people that went in, the entire event, to me i see his fingerprints all over it. and i think even though from the outside, oh, i told them not to go in, we were just there for we were just there for you know, to guard people, it s silly, but it s also very carefully planned to keep himself you know, to keep himself out of trouble. she helped him in some ways start the oath keepers but that s her view of what s going on now, the view of someone who knows him. prosecutors are drawing on a range of evidence to actually make a similar point, that this defendant planned
geoff shepard was a white house fellow who was later assigned to the domestic council in the nixon administration. when the white house began requiring a legal defense as the watergate matter grew in 1973 and 74. jeff was the youngest lawyer on the team. he was the first to listen to the smoking gun tape. he coined the phrase smoking gun. in fact later. he was there in the east room on august 9th as president nixon said farewell to his staff. and geoff shepard was standing in the back of the east room, and he was not happy. after hearing the smoking gun tape people leave like many the president nixon was hiding the truth and had been for several years. and then jeff started digging. and he dug and he dug and he dug for 15 years. through the documents and through files that were once sealed. and jeff soon found out that what he was led to believe about watergate and indeed what the nation was led to believe was well. let s just say that there s more to the story. and i ll let
