Academy presents check to St. Jude

Officials from St. John Paul the Great Academy in Torrington presented a check for $3,076 to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital with proceeds from an annual math-solving exercise by the Catholic elementary school’s intermediate grade students.
Jennifer Nypert, intermediate grade teacher, presented the check to Kristin Raymond, who is carrying on her late father Tim Driscoll’s annual local telethon for St. Jude’s.
Nypert said students earn pledge money from their families for problems solved in St. Jude’s annual Math-A-Thon.
Raymond said the school has participated in the fund-raising effort every year since her father founded the telethon 42 years ago. She said most years, the kids also perform in the telethon, though COVID-19 prevented that this year. ....

'Christmas Is A-Glow' light show extended through Saturday

GOSHEN – The “Christmas Is A-Glow” display of lights has been extended to today and Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Action Wildlife, 337 Torrington Road.
Organizers of the COVID-safe drive-thru event, a fundraiser for St. John Paul the Great Academy in Torrington, reported more than 6,300 people drove through the event the previous two weekends, prompting the extension.
The event is hosted by Action Wildlife founder Jim Mazzarelli.
Viewers can safely enjoy the lights from within their vehicles while listening on car radios to children singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” The Rev. Emmanuel Ihemedu, pastor of St. John Paul the Great Parish, interprets the song in biblical context. ....
