Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says an independent review of local government is a chance to explore how the Treaty partnership can be embodied through the role and representation of iwi/Māori in local government.
The review will also look at how the system of local democracy needs to evolve over the next 30 years.
It will be chaired by former Waimakariri District Council chief executive Jim Palmer and includes Māori resource management and cultural heritage consultant Antoine Coffin, former senior public servant John Ombler, Auckland Council community and social innovation manager Gael Surgenor, and former Auckland deputy mayor Penny Hulse.

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says an independent review of local government will explore how councils can maintain and improve the wellbeing of New Zealanders in the communities they serve long into the future.
Announcing the review today Nanaia Mahuta says it will focus on how our system of local democracy needs to evolve over the next 30 years.
“Local government plays an important role in our democratic system, giving people a voice in the leadership of their communities and in the governance of services and publicly owned assets.
“Local councils are essential to maintaining and improving our wellbeing and we need to get the right settings for them to continue delivering their important mahi.

Announcing the review today, Minister of Local Government Nanaia Mahuta said it would focus on how our system of local democracy needed to evolve over the next 30 years.
Mahuta said now more than ever, local governance participation and democracy needed to be strengthened. It is about our people.
The approach was needed to improve wellbeing of communities and environment, she said.
It needed to honour Te Tiriti O Waitangi too, she said. It s an inclusive approach, it speaks to everybody.
It had been more than 30 years since the last meaningful review of the sector, Mahuta said.

today is a genuine opportunity to address a wave of serious
issues across housing, transport and water by strengthening
the ability of councils to execute, address long standing
infrastructure funding and financing challenges and ensure
that New Zealand becomes a more competitive, equitable and
sustainable society,” says Hamish Glenn Policy Director at
Infrastructure New Zealand.
