The City of Hampton announced Sledge’s rehire Wednesday, the same day BizSense reported his planned departure after five years as Richmond's economic development director.
The deal to bring Commanders camp to Richmond dates back to 2013. The economic boon city leaders envisioned never fully materialized, although fan excitement and turnout were sizable at first.
While the team isn t returning, the bill will continue to show up every year. Richmond city taxpayers are on the hook for about $700,000 annually until 2033.
