I was shocked to realize Dr. John McSpadden died last week.
He lived behind my new house with his lovely wife, Jane. I have no sense of direction so the first time I ventured down the path through the woods, I had no idea whose magical woodland garden I had stumbled upon. It looked like something you would read about in a fairytale, with a wooden bridge over a babbling brook and oak leaf hydrangeas dripping with massive white blooms and masses of lilies and native rhododendron and azalea and natural boulders. Truly, it felt like the enchanting setting had been created just for me; my viewpoint from a hill in the woods was perfect for taking it all in.
