This week’s artifact came to the Des Moines County Historical Society in 1988.
It is made of wood and is estimated to be somewhere around 207 years old or at least the tag attached to it claims that it was about 100 years old when it was donated to the Hawk Eye Natives on Oct. 3, 1913. Part of the artifact is carved to resemble a bird, possibly a duck. There is a hole in the long branching part, and where the “bird’s” tail would normally be. The bird is represented by a stylized bird’s head, and what could be taken as a wing. ....
