Persuading trump not to pull troops out as french fighter jets flew alongside british and american planes in suspected chemical weapons centers. joining us now, john har wood and jane harmon, the president and ceo of the woodrow wilson center. jane, one of the things we listed was the iran deal. to us that seems like it has to be on macron s, top of his to do list. what do you think? i think it is on the top of his to do list, and i think ang will merkel when she comes friday after macron leaves will raise the same subject. europe does not want us out of the deal. and frankly, i think it would be the dumbest thing in the world if we did this and then tried to persuade north korea that we should be relied upon to make a deal on nukes. so what i hope happens, and i think the european leaders are for this, is a side agreement ....
Home again, i mean to his base? trump you re talking about? correct. i mean trump to his base. because trump does well with whomever is next to him at the white house at a big event. and then a day passes and the far right media stands up and says don t forget, we re america first, america only. what are you doing over there? it goes back with the side agreement, and says, look, this was a very bad deal. i alone was able to persuade the europeans to join me in improving this deal. iran s ballistic missiles are the real problem for the united states. he might argue they have advanced ballistic missile capacity, and they were testing because it s outside the contours of the existing deal. plus they re maligned behavior in the region threatens israel, and i think he can have a pretty good press conference based on that. key words, i alone. that s right. john, jane, thank you very much for joining us. look at even the video of the two of them when he greets ....
The democrats are talking about this as a campaign issue and not something they expect to make happen. a couple of quick questions, john. they paid out what, $225 billion over the course of the problem since it was put into place. when it comes to the political side, is this going to be a house versus senate situation or will it quickly come and go? i think it will be republican versus democrat situation. harry reid can bring it up if he wants to. i don t think he expects to win and the white house expects to win. if you don t have that critical mass of democrats believing not only also that they have the mass to make it happen. if that s not the case, you are talking about rhetoric and not a push intended to get over the finish line. what happens if this is not extended? i think you will see more ....
That show and continuing unemployment that tapped into people s savings. that prevents them from purchase and invest in the future. this is not a stimulus program. giving incentives shouldn t be about pushing them into poverty. that s not an incentive. what we need to do is think about what s happening around the country and i think the confluence of events and the fact that there a lot of americans that have been kicked out of food stamps. again, we are talking about unemployment and states that are struggling just to get the minimum wage up a dollar or two. if you look at the events at the same time, this does nothing for the economy. fascinating debate. some people say how long can you call the economy a problem when we are growing at 4%? other people say we have structural issues where we may not have good jobs again. i want to bring in john har ....
Article in politico pointing out, this is the same before. why would they believe it this time. paul ryan doesn t have the final word on whether this budget goes anywhere. the people the president is trying to communicate with are he is not rate republicans interested in some sort of a long-term deal who don t like the sequester for the republican perspective because of defense cuts and want different way that more rational going forward. there some space in congress for republicans and democrats to talk about a deal that has a different framework for cuts that does something about entitlement programs that raise smes revenue. can you get that through the senate? can you get the house to go along? we don t know. but the whole purpose of this budget is to provoke that conversation and see if he can move the ball a little bit down the field. to your point, tonight, john, president meeting with he is not rate republican groups there, what can you tell me about that meeting tonight. ....
