About the stratobowl and the stratosphere flight, and sending man up above the stratosphere. Essentially, the rapid city area is the home of the first spaceflight. What the National Geographic and u. S. Army air corps did was they decided to Work Together to make this happen. They wanted to find a natural shape to rest the balloon and the gondola in. They were looking for a bowl area, not only to spread out the balloon on the ground, but also that natural bowl shape protects the gondola the first couple thousand feet as it goes up. They scoured all of north america for a place. They had a couple of different decisions that they could have made, places they could have chosen. And essentially they chose rapid city because of how kind the people were, because of how welcoming we are. The perfect shape of the bowl was nice, too, but it did come down to the people of the area. That was the reasoning behind choosing it. The first attempt happened in 1934. There were three men on the first fl
Space center in texas, which does man missions. We provide some of the systems that will fit into that mission, but we are not the Overall Mission providers. We are at nasas John Glenn Research Center in cleveland, ohio. We are the third oldest of the nasa centers. We broke ground on january 3, 1941. We predate nasa by a little under 18 years. Naca, which extends for the National Advisory committee for aeronautics, was founded in 1915, in the infancy of aviation in this country to study this new technology and figure out how we can harness it for economic, military use. But prior to this center, they had really only focused on general aeronautics. They had not really done anything with aircraft engines. They had been seeing what they were doing in europe and found that they were way ahead of us when it came to Aircraft Engine Research, especially the germans. In the late 1930s, that made them a little nervous. Congress approved the establishment of a Third Laboratory that would focus o
Thank you. [applause] mr. Holbrook howdy. Jfk emphasized the importance of the space race during a time of fear in the u. S. Incredible men and women took this challenge head on. Nasa became a beacon of hope for the nation. I am honored to introduce one of those legends. The man who pioneered apollo 11 and apollo 13. If you have ever heard the phrase houston, Tranquility Base is here, the eagle has landed. With great honor, i am here to introduce houston. Mr. Gene kranz. [applause] mr. Kranz thank you. It is a real privilege. I have a couple aggies in the family. To be introduced by an aggie. They told me i had three hours to speak, so we will have to be speaking through lunch here. But jared said no, he will give me a call when i have five minutes. So he is going to stand up and give me sort of a heads up. When i finish, i have a three minute video of the actual Lunar Landing. And i think that will put this year, this decade of the 50th anniversary in context of what is happening. I u
Which one . O geometry and speaking geometry and speaking. I prefer it over euclidean coordinates. Catherine has had the fortune of having hollywood shine a light on her life. There are people right here in West Virginia that had no idea of what Katherine Johnson did for nasa and United States of america. When the movie Hidden Figures came out, it showed everyone who Katherine Johnson was, what she did and how profound she was in the pages of american history. She was hired as what they called then a computer. She simply came in and did mathematical equations for nasa. But they did not realize was that she was more than just a computer. She was a mathematic genius. That is what Katherine Johnson was. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Zero. In fact, john glenn who said this computer thing, not katherine, this building that this computer that was built you want to been verified by Katherine Johnson. He did not ask the mathematicians from m. I. T. He did not ask the mathematicians from stanford or harvard.
