After push from environmentalists, NJ Transit’s new group is focused on sustainability Updated Feb 27, 2021; Five months ago, environmentalists battered NJ Transit officials about having renewable energy options considered for a $577 million TransitGrid back-up power plant, reminding officials of plans by their boss Gov. Phil Murphy to eliminate air pollution by 2050. During its first meeting on Wednesday, some of those opponents praised NJ Transit for forming an Energy and Sustainability Policy Committee. The committee was formed by Diane Guttierez-Scaccetti, transportation commissioner and NJ Transit board president, late last year. “Thank you for establishing this committee, said activist Elizabeth Ndoye of Hoboken. “I’d ask you continue to lead the way and protect the health and well-being of customers and neighbors.
