Candidate has proven herself
I live in Paula Blackmon’s district. She wasn’t my choice in her first campaign, but she definitely has my vote now. Her two challengers this year are demagoguing Blackmon’s vote to reduce the police overtime budget, claiming she wants to “defund” the police. The amount involved, $7 million, is a tiny fraction of the overall police budget of $539 million, which itself was increased from the previous year. ....

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson tweeted there s more work ahead, but justice was delivered and the system worked.
A jury of Derek Chauvin’s peers has delivered justice in the only way that they could. Ultimately, the rule of law prevailed. ....

Before Christmas, the city will learn who the next chief of the Dallas Police Department will be. This week, the City Council, mayor, community stakeholders, and the public got a glimpse of the seven candidates vying for the position. On Tuesday, dozens of community groups participated in private group panels with the candidates. Yesterday the finalists fielded questions posed by City Council candidates during a three-hour-plus livestream. While the decision is City Manager T.C. Over the past few weeks, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has repeatedly complained that the city’s search for a new police chief has been less than transparent. During a recent local radio appearance, he said he wishes the City Council’s Public Safety Committee could handle the hiring process. In a newsletter emailed last week, Johnson said he was concerned about the qualifications in the job description and wondered why Dallas couldn’t hold a public form with the candidates in the midst of a pandemic. In Tuesday’s state of the city address, Johnson spoke about his desire to continue to push for more public involvement in the police chief selection process. ....
