John Deere wants to help feed the world using 5G, cloud computing


Moline, Illinois-based John Deere packs a lot of technology into its tractors. In fact, in some ways John Deere more closely resembles a tech company than it does an agriculture firm. The company hopes to use its expertise in both agriculture and technology to improve current farming practices and increase food production around the world.
While that might sound like a lofty goal, John Deere is already using 4G technology and GPS to make farmers more efficient. The company currently offers GPS-directed tractors that, when coupled with the company s correction technology, can steer to within an inch of where the tractor needs to be, allowing for very precise seed planting. According to the company, a single John Deere tractor and planter can precisely plant more than 700 corn seeds and 2,800 soybean seeds every second. ....

Q&A: Kyle Plattner, senior product manager for John Deere

Kyle Plattner has spent his career at the intersection of technology and agriculture. He’s had a foot in both worlds nearly all his life. Plattner earned a computer science degree from Eureka College and a master s of information systems from Robert Morris University. He
 spent nine years working for Precision Planting and The Climate Corporation on the FieldView cab team. Since 2019, he’s been using that passion to improve John Deere’s Operations Center mobile app as the senior product manager.

John Deere AutoPath Reduces Potential Crop Damage

Last month, John Deere launched a new precision application, AutoPath. According to John Mishler, tactical marketing manager, it’s a tool to help farmers easily manage guidance lines during the crop year.
“It reduces potential crop damage by helping keep sprayer wheels between the rows and off the crop,” he said. “It makes harvest easier in down crop conditions and really eliminates the need to count rows or search for wide-narrow guess rows when opening new lands during harvest.”
So how does it work? Mishler said it’s an application that collects geospatial planted row data exactly where rows are planted. ....
