The phones rang on Friday, one month earlier than expected. More than 50 pro-democracy politicians and activists across Hong Kong received a call from the authorities: they were to report to police on Sunday.
Expecting to be charged and held for lengthy jail terms, many spent the weekend making last-minute preparations. They picked out books to take into custody, arranged for pets to be taken care of, said goodbye to their loved ones. Tiffany Yuen, 27, spent the day at home, where she was photographed cuddling a Buzz Lightyear toy, before visiting constituents in Tin Wan. ....

Hong Kong, March 2 (ANI): Hong Kong police has charged 47 former opposition lawmakers and activists for conspiring to subvert state power under the draconian national security law in the region.
The lawmakers were charged on Sunday for their alleged roles in an unofficial primary run-off election that authorities linked to a plot to overthrow the government, according to South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The hearing, which started at 4 pm on Monday, was finally forced to adjourn after defendant Clarisse Yeung Suet-ying fainted in the dock at about 1.45 am the following morning and was subsequently sent to the hospital. Co-defendants Long Hair Leung Kwok-hung, Roy Tam Hoi-pong and Mike Lam King-nam were also taken in an ambulance after saying they felt unwell. ....

Hong Kong defendants taken away by ambulance during marathon bail hearing

Last modified on Tue 2 Mar 2021 04.43 EST
A bail hearing for 47 campaigners, election candidates and activists charged with national security offences in Hong Kong has resumed after at least four defendants were taken away by ambulance during Monday’s marathon session, which lasted until 3am.
The group have been charged under Hong Kong’s national security law with conspiracy to commit subversion in relation to an unofficial pan-democratic primary poll held last year before legislative elections that were later postponed.
Prosecutors sought to have bail denied and the case adjourned for three months to allow further time for investigation. The defence objected, questioning why charges had been laid if the case was so far off readiness. By 11pm on Monday, just six submissions had been processed. ....

In an orchestrated spectacle seemingly timed to coordinate with leaders in Beijing, 47 prominent pro-democracy supporters including very nearly every member of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy camp were crammed into a West Kowloon courtroom on Monday, March 1 for a bail hearing. They were charged the day prior with subversion under the Hong Kong National Security Law (NSL) for running in an informal primary election in July 2020, in which more than 600,000 Hong Kong people voted. If ultimately convicted, they face up to life in prison.
After adjourning for several hours when it emerged that multiple defendants were denied access to their lawyers, Monday’s hearing continued for more than ten hours without reaching a conclusion. Just before 2 a.m. it was adjourned for nine hours after one defendant fainted, and three more were sent to the emergency room a ....
