New cables are being laid on Tuesday after teams from the City of Johannesburg completed the removal of damaged electrical infrastructure and concrete under the M1 highway.
Work to repair damaged electricity infrastructure after cables caught fire underground along the M1 in Johannesburg this week has begun, City Power said.
"We are on our own and that place is unsafe," says one of the survivors of the fire at Usindiso building in Marshalltown, Joburg, who has been relocated with others to a shelter in Denver.
The City of Johannesburg has obtained nine court orders declaring privately owned buildings in the inner city unfit for habitation and giving authorities the green light to evacuate and demolish them.
