A return to tradition: Cal State San Marcos graduates hold in-person ceremonies

SAN MARCOS  Eric Sy wasn’t expecting to spend more than a quarter of his college experience inside his family’s home in Rancho Bernardo. But that’s where the 22-year-old computer science major at Cal State San Marcos spent much of 2020 and 2021, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. So it was a bit surreal for Sy and the several thousand fellow graduates who massed at the university’s track and field site Saturday in their black caps and gowns. The graduation ceremony marked the first time most of the classmates had stepped foot on the campus or gathered in person since before the health emergency shut things down in March 2020.

San Diego honors missing and murdered Indigenous women

Keely Linton knows first-hand about the abuse suffered by Indigenous women. She experienced domestic abuse, and she saw that violence reflected in the experiences of family and friends, and through her advocacy work. But because of lapses in reporting and a lack of coordination between tribal, county and federal governments, Linton who is Íipay and Cupeno Native from the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians said accurate, local data is hard to come by. “There’s just a lack of research and collective data to really know how many have been missing, how many have been murdered,” Linton said. “It’s really not something that has really been tracked properly.”

In historic move, county removes barrier to tribal land expansion

Print For more than 20 years, San Diego County has barred its 18 federally recognized tribes from expanding their reservations, a reaction prompted by concerns over a sudden surge of casino construction. That blanket prohibition was lifted Wednesday by the Board of Supervisors, who voted to end their decades-long opposition to fee-to-trust applications, the process by which tribes can petition to annex property. The practice has long been a source of contention for local Indigenous tribes, who need to transfer the land they purchase into trust in order to build housing and essential resources. The board also voted to remove absolute opposition to liquor licenses on tribal lands and to establish a liaison between the tribes and the county
