MDP discussion centres around hotel conversions
Poll

City council passed second reading of its new Municipal Development Plan during this week’s regular meeting, but not before engaging in discussions on how local hotels should be converted to residential dwellings in the future.
Most of these discussions centred around “Policy 60” in the new MDP draft document which states the City will: “support potential options for owners to convert existing motels and hotels, by exploring the concentration of these uses and the implications of supporting their conversion to residential uses (including, but not limited to, supportive or affordable housing) in relevant Area Redevelopment Plans.” ....

Joe Mauro shouldn't be paid if he isn't going to work

By Letter to the Editor on May 15, 2021.
Editor: I have been a resident of Lethbridge since 2000. Just wanted to voice my concern aboutc ouncilman Joe Mauro and his continued absenteeism.
His track record for missing meetings is concerning, but yesterday’s walkout was especially disheartening to say the least.
Views aside, I don’t think someone should get paid if they don’t show up for work at taxpayers’ expense.
The public deserves the person elected to at least attend mandatory meetings.
In his absence he represents no one as his representative vote is what people elect him for.
If he doesn’t show up for work he shouldn’t get paid, much like any other profession in our community. ....

Economic Standing Policy Committee finishes week of deliberations
Poll
yes
The Economic Standing Policy Committee of city council adjourned on Friday after five days of deliberations leaving $31 million unallocated for the next elected council to make use of after this fall’s municipal election.
While most initiatives funded in this upcoming 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Program cycle were modest and relatively inexpensive to fund, there were a few which stood out as having a larger impact on the city in the years to come.
The recommendation that city council fund from the CIP a green bin program was approved by Economic SPC over the next fours years for about $3.5 million per year ($14 million in total) to cover operating costs, but it will also trigger a $10.6 million investment in a new organics sorting facility through City borrowing, and eventually a $7 per month additional utility charge by 2023 for every residential dwelling in the city. ....

Editor: It floors me that the Lethbridge City Council is proceeding with a budget that has us spending hundreds of millions of taxpayers money, after being told that we want our taxes to decrease and unnecessary spending cut out.
For decades, the only person who seems to listen to a large group of us, who have consistently asked for less spending, is Joe Mauro.
Unfortunately, he was disgusted enough to walk away from the committee meeting where the budget was being discussed and I am fearful he will walk away from council altogether, where he is the only representative for somany of us. ....
