“I can’t wait to get old.” That’s what Todd Lewis, president of Shoe Fly Corp., said after watching Jeff Long’s presentation of the Graystone Grande Palazzo on Thursday morning at the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club. Long, who now owns 15 Graystones in seven counties and three personal care homes, offered a video presentation of his project to convert the former Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital into a building featuring both independent living and personal care units. “We’ve been doing this for 4 1/2 years,” Long said. “When I started, I thought it would be two years. I thought it would cost about $20 million and we’re now at $40 million and counting. It has been a fun project.”

wfrank@altoonamirror.com The coronavirus pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to law enforcement in 2020, Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks told members of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club on Thursday via Zoom. “In 2020, we had more homicides here than in the previous 10 years. The number of fatal drug overdose deaths increased in 2020 as a result of the pandemic and the imposed lockdown by the governor,” Weeks said. The influx of drugs has been a big part of the problem. Weeks said the problem spiked after the end of mandatory sentencing in 2013. “We have seen an influx of pure and cheap heroin and a dramatic increase in drug overdose deaths. In 2018, we saw a massive rise in methamphetamine that continues to plague our community,” Weeks said.

Fred Imler Sr. is being remembered as a kind and generous man. A partner in the family business, Imler’s Poultry, Imler was well known throughout the business community. He passed away Tuesday at the age of 87. Please see obituary on Page A4. In 2012, Imler received the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence. “Fred was an incredible businessman whose demeanor generated sincerity and trust. He appreciated recognition but never dwelled on it and usually deflected it to others,” Chamber President/CEO Joe Hurd said. “Is there anything greater than having a legacy based so heavily on philanthropy?
