Will Tony Moreno run as a Republican in Pittsburgh mayoral race?


In the Democratic primary, Moreno received 7,390 votes, or about 13% percent of the total. Gainey took 46%, incumbent Mayor Bill Peduto 39.3% and Michael Thompson 1.2%.
Moreno was out of town Wednesday. In a text message he indicated he hasn’t made a decision on whether he plans on running.
“When I get home I will make sure all things are correct and announce for sure either way,” Moreno wrote in the text.
Allegheny County Republican Committee Chair Sam DeMarco said he’s looking forward to meeting with Moreno soon to “decide where we go from here.”
It isn’t unheard of for Democrats who receive enough votes in the Republican primary to appear on the ballot, DeMarco said, and if Moreno chooses to proceed it will give voters a choice in the fall. ....

As vaccine rates slow with the threat of a new surge looming this fall, elected officials on both sides of the aisle are stepping forward to encourage constituents to get a covid-19 vaccine even as they acknowledge this is a personal decision.
While experts say such efforts could be a double-edged sword at reelection time and will appeal to a limited group, they say every bit could help sway someone who is on the fence.
Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward, R- Hempfield, spoke publicly last week about her decision to get vaccinated and encouraged others to take the leap, saying, “It can’t hurt,” and it could speed the return to normalcy. She said she’s been careful to stress she does not support forced vaccination. Despite that caveat, she said her local office informed her it received some negative calls after the Tribune-Review repo ....
