With new Fulton County elected officials being sworn in next month or earlier this month, outgoing politicians reflected on their time in office during interviews with the Neighbor. Sheriff Ted Jackson, who was appointed by Gov. Sonny Perdue as the interim sheriff for the last six months of 2004, was elected to the post in 2008. He served as sheriff for three terms before being defeated by Pat Labat in the Aug. 11 primary runoff election. Jackson said he inherited an office that was dealing with a federal consent decree regarding issues with the county jail and the aftermath of the 2005 incident in which inmate Brian Nichols escaped custody in the courthouse during his trial and killed four individuals, including the judge presiding over his case. ....
The Fulton County Board of Health is planning to transition into a Georgia entity as part of a state mandate dating back to 2016. House Bill 885, which was approved by the state Legislature in April of that year, repeals an existing law that created boards of health in all 159 Georgia counties. It calls for each countyâs board of health to transfer into a state body instead. Fultonâs board of health is making that transition but first wanted to ensure its staff would not lose anything in the process. âAll staff with the board of health will be accepted by the state, at their salaries, with no loss of salaries, with the same job titles and same benefits,â Robb Pitts, the Fulton Board of Commissionersâ chair, said, adding some county facilities may also transfer to state use as part of the transition. ....
