View Comments GREEN BAY - Green Bay-area residents will be able to return to Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, a year after the coronavirus pandemic forced veterans groups to cancel events or honor fallen service members virtually. Volunteers have been busy this week placing flags on veterans graves in cemeteries across the Green Bay area ahead of in-person events scheduled over the course of Monday. A statewide commemoration of the holiday will remain virtual, though. Memorial Day is a day to remember veterans who have died serving the United States. Its roots go back to Decoration Day, started in the years after the Civil War when soldiers would adorn the graves of soldiers who died in the conflict with flowers. It has been a national holiday since 1971. ....

Here in Wisconsin, Veteran Affairs clinics are working to get them the vaccine. “We’re taking the fight to Covid and we’re winning this battle,” said Gary Kunich, Milwaukee VA Medical Center’s spokesperson. He tells FOX 11 across their Milwaukee, Cleveland, Appleton, and Green Bay VA Clinics, they’ve already vaccinated more than 10,000 veterans and 4,000 members of their staff. “Weâve been vaccinating since I believe the first week of January when we started doing this aggressively.” The vaccines going to the clinics come directly from the federal government. Veteran Affairs also has set different eligibility phases. ....
