i m erin burnett. breaking news on what matters to all americans watching tonight. the payroll tax. democrats and republicans have been fighting for weeks over how to pass an extension. now, if it gets extended, the average american will save about $1,000 in taxes next year, senators have been meeting right now, and john thune of south dakota stepped out a moment ago. we re hoping some good news. what can you tell us? right, it s a two-month extension, erin. it has unemployment insurance, the payroll tax cut extension, and what we call the doc fix, the deals with physician reimbursements under medicare and it also has the keystone pipeline language that was in the house also in this particular senate bill. so i feel really good about where we are considering the fact that the senate democrats i don t think were comfortable with the pay fors that were being proposed. and we would like to have gotten a full year like what was passed through the house of representatives. ....

Deal. i think the mechanism that the policymakers put together is a reasonably good one. of course, they have to follow it through. it s the process itself that i think has unnerved people. and, hopefully, with the markets down and, again, with all this wealth that s evaporated, that will send a strong signal to both, again, democrats and republicans that they need to come to terms over the next couple, three months, and they need to do that in a reasonably graceful way. jared, i give the white house some credit for coming back in september with a new jobs plan. my feeling is these plans are not enough. what the unemployed need or jobs need is leverage. it seems to me the wit house needs to say they won t sign anything out of the super committee that doesn t include a jobs component that the congressional budget office scores it creating 2 million jobs or more. am i missing anything on that? the only thing you might be missing there is no one expects much to come out of the super c ....
