Dr Joanne Thwaite, of Dstl, has been given an MBE A WILTSHIRE scientist who works for the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down near Salisbury has been awarded an MBE in the Queen s New Year honours. Dr Joanne Thwaite, from Warminster, has been awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which recognises her service to the NHS during Covid-19 pandemic. Dstl said Dr Thwaite had shown selfless dedication carrying out repeated and sustained deployments to hospital laboratories where she supported NHS staff dealing with an unprecedented increase of workload. Using her scientific skillset, Joanne worked within diagnostic laboratories, from the very onset of the pandemic.

Salisbury s Anne Baker awarded MBE in New Year s Honours

MBE recipients Anne Baker from Salisbury, who at 106 years old, received an MBE for fundraising for the NSPCC. Anne said: “It was a great surprise and a great honour because I felt as if I didn’t deserve it at all. “I’ve just been helping the NSPCC for about 50 years - I always have the party in my garden, which normally makes about £1,000 a year which is lovely. “We couldn’t hold it this year but we still managed to raise £4,000 instead of having our usual party, so we were pleased and grateful to everyone who contributed to that.

Stockbridge mathematician given OBE in New Year s Honours

A Stockbridge mathematician has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours List for her work in tackling the coronavirus pandemic. Dr Phillippa Spencer was awarded an OBE in the list, published on December 30, with his honour being given “for services to defence, particularly during the Covid-19 response.” The award recognises not just her work to provide data to government during the pandemic, but also in other health emergencies, including the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury and the Ebola crisis. She said: “I am genuinely overwhelmed by the honour. The award recognises not only me, but an incredible team of people who provide vital support to so many collective efforts. I am beyond happy to have been nominated.”
