RPS are hosting a one-day online symposium, curated by Jennie Ricketts. Through the work of photographers and those working within photography it explores themes around diversity and inclusion. Booking is via the BPF please In order for diversity to have real meaning, people of different classes, ethnicity, ability, sexuality should be given equal opportunity for inclusive collaboration. Photography is arguably the most democratic universal language with a broad global reach, so it seems the perfect medium for bringing people together to achieve this. A festival that celebrates both the practice of photography in its many forms, and offers a commitment to change the disparity between one practice or another can only be a positive means of attaining that goal. ....
About the photographer: Joanne Coates is an award winning working class documentary storyteller who uses the medium of photography. She is based in the North of England and is a winner of the British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain 2020 Awards. Joanne is interested in rurality, working life and class inequality and her work has been shown internationally and across the UK. She is currently Artist in Residence at Berwick Visual Arts and Newcastle University. Her practice is as much about process, participation and working with communities. She is also the Director of the Arts organisation Lens Think, to meet, share, grow ideas, & develop photography in the North of England. With the aims of fighting for class equality and a more creative industry through participation and radical community arts. ....
