Suit claims districts took years to report bus driver's sexual abuse

have sued
the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs Unified School Districts, alleging that they failed for years to report a bus driver s sexual abuse to police.
The two, who
were students in CVUSD and are now adults, filed the suit against the districts and the bus driver, Jose Luis Moncada, of Desert Hot Springs, earlier this month in Riverside County Superior Court.
Moncada, 64, was arrested last year and charged with eight counts of committing lewd acts with a child under 14 years old, along with sentence-enhancing allegations of multiple victims. The crimes occurred in 2010, according to authorities, who said there were three victims. ....

Local school districts are changing graduation requirements so more seniors can graduate this year.
News Channel 3’s Caitlin Thropay explains why these changes may happen.
The Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) outlined in a presentation at their last board meeting how the pandemic has created significant hardships for their students especially graduating seniors. That’s why they are changing their graduation requirements.

Woman accused of attempting to kidnap children near local elementary school
A woman who school employees say was attempted to kidnap several students from an elementary school in Desert Hot Springs.
Desert Hot Springs Police were called to the 65700 block of Avenida Jalisco at around Noon, according to a statement from the department. Officers were responding to calls that a person was trying to fight passerbys in the area. Officers made contact with the woman, a 24-year-old.
Employees at a nearby elementary school told officers that the woman tried to grab several students as they were dismissed from school.
Interviews with students and witnesses led officers to determine that the woman attempted to forcibly remove two students, but was unsuccessful. The woman had been detained by school staff and security until police arrived. ....

Palm Springs school district returns some students to classrooms for first time in 13 months

Instead, the girl was reaching out her hands for a squirt of hand sanitizer.
“We are so happy to see the children, but we can’t hug,” Perez said as she provided sanitizer and checked student identification cards Monday morning, the first day of in-classroom learning in the Palm Springs Unified School District this school year.
After 13 months of no in-class learning in the district because of the COVID-19 pandemic and state and county restrictions, Monday saw students in kindergarten, first and second grades in classrooms. Third through sixth graders will return to in-person hybrid learning next Monday, with middle school and high school classes going back to class in the following weeks. ....

COVID-19 vaccination clinic comes together quickly for Palm Springs Unified teachers, staff

With unexpected access to doses of the new Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, the Palm Springs Unified School District quickly put together a vaccination clinic for district staff and teachers Wednesday.
It is the first of what the district hopes will be several clinics to help vaccinate its nearly 2,500 staff members. While other districts in the desert are also planning clinics, the PSUSD clinic came as a bit of a surprise.
“Rite-Aid in Desert Hot Springs reached out to us over the weekend and said they had 200 doses that specifically have to be allocated to educators, and would we be interested,” said Joan Boiko, coordinator of communications and community outreach for the district. ....
