Schools change strategy in effort for equity

PORT JERVIS – It isn’t only students who are learning on Zoom. About 30 Port Jervis School District educators and guest presenters are meeting weekly through Zoom to foster equitable life paths for all students.
One keynote Zoom speaker is Joakim Lartey, a musician, storyteller and educator who grew up in Ghana, West Africa. He has worked with the PJSD staff and students over the past couple of years. He noted that while racial and other equalities are always a goal, the focus of this particular effort is equity.
“Equality means all people have equal opportunities and are starting everything equally. For example, in a drought a person is given two buckets full of water to take home,” Lartey explained. “In this example, maybe a person may need three buckets full of water not to be thirsty, as there may be more people in this family.
