Plans for 36 homes and a “heart space” co-designed by the community in north-west Bristol have been approved unanimously against officers’ recommendation.
Ambition Lawrence Weston (ALW) residents’ group and United Communities housing association were granted permission despite the development breaching planning policy meant to protect grass verges from being built on.
The proposed layout of the Bristol City Council-owned site at Astry Close, where 16 postwar semi-detached houses were bulldozed in 2012 after suffering “concrete cancer”, is also “overcrowded” with the impact on privacy for new and existing householders deemed “too severe”. ....

Covid rules meant the launch of Sandy Hore-Ruthven’s 2021 mayoral manifesto was a fairly understated al fresco affair.
The pandemic has also seen a shift in focus for the Green candidate, who has put Bristol’s economic recovery front and centre of his pledges, promising to help the city rebuild and then thrive.
Standing outside the Station on Silver Street – a building owned by Creative Youth Network, a charity Sandy is CEO of – the mayoral hopeful said he wants to instigate a recovery plan that works for all communities and “especially the areas that have been forgotten by the current administration”. ....

Motion to hold referendum on scrapping Bristol's mayoral system defeated

A “demoralised” Labour councillor broke ranks with a stirring speech criticising the mayoral model, as a bid to hold a referendum on whether to scrap it was defeated.
Mike Davies, a councillor for Ashley ward, became the latest to rebel against the party whip on Tuesday when he seconded a Lib Dem motion calling for Bristolians to be given a fresh say on having an elected mayor.
He told full council the current system had made the role of members “hollow” and let communities down.
