then pop pop pop pop. the shots ringing out. kathy park is covering the dayton shooting for us. she joins us on the phone. what are you hearing? reporter: kendis, jo, good morning. it s disheartening to be on the air after reporting the last shooting in el paso, texas. the shooting happened around 1:22 a.m. the oregon district. which is considered the downtown area. as you heard a lot of people mention, this is a popular place on a saturday night known for nightlife. lots of restaurants and bars in the area. it s relatively active. it s a saturday night. lots of people were out and about. there are officers in close proximity patrolling the area. the police official a couple hours ago when they briefed the media said that was critical. it allowed the response time to be shortened. they were able to arrive on the scene within minutes. police are saying it s just one
the suspect surrendered at the scene. an online diatribe connected to the 21-year-old in the dallas area is a key part of the investigation. governor greg abbott of texas says it will be prosecuted as a hate crime. blayne alexander and morgan chesky are live on the o scene for us. we ll start with morgan chesky who is there. morgan? reporter: kendis and jo ling, we re here about a hundred yards from that walmart where the shooting took place yesterday causing so much tragedy in and around this city. upon arriving here last night, you can feel the tone here as everyone is in shock as a result of this. we ve seen the images and the pictures come in as a result of that shooting. these people hiding for their lives inside that walmart as that shooter made its way through the building opening fire on individuals. we heard from a person inside the walmart saying when she
reporter: jo, this investigation very much under way this morning. the walmart where all of this took place just behind me about 50 yards away. that s where investigators are still making their way through that building, gathering every bit of evidence they can in hopes of building a case against this alleged shooter. the only believed suspect that walked into this walmart yesterday morning, we believe he started to open fire in the parking lot before making his way inside where some people were able to run outside to find safety, others trapped inside, forbesed to hide. we ve seen forced to hide. video of people ducking behind whatever they could as the telltale sound of gunfire rank throughout the building. we know there was a woman working at a checkout who confused that sound with someone dropping large boxes. it was indeed the sound of gunfire. she was able to get people and move them outside. this walmart, keep in mind, is in a popular area. we re only five miles from a
adults, given the time of day and nature of the venue. doctor, are you guys part of the kettering medical center group, health system? we are not. you are not, okay. so, that s quite of note, because you mentioned there that you guys received 14 victims, you re a level one trauma center. one of those victims admitted. you haven t performed any surgeries, and i take that of note because we take a look at those numbers where it says at least 16 injured. you had 14 of them. the kettering medical center health group also took in some injuries nine. yes, exactly. so, there are several that were being conservative, i believe, at this point. well, i want to clarify that we received 14 in our main campus and 2 others at satellite facilities. so we did receive a total of 16 at the miami valley premier health system. i don t know about the kettering numbers. okay. and jo ling spoke with someone
