There are woods to the back of my house, and in this strange, upside-down year they have been a constant. Constant in the spring, when the world paused, flight paths shut and birdsong rang a rampant swathe through the bluebells and wild garlic. Constant through the now pink, misty mornings of December. I have measured time against these woods for years; the leaves of their trees turning fat and green then later, dusty and heat soaked, to October’s soft russet and winter’s brown husks.
At Easter time, I received a letter from a stranger, an elderly woman named Doris, who, locked down, alone, was taking time to write to people that she had wanted to write to over the years. We began a correspondence, and my children were keen for facts about her at breakfast. ....
